Hyde Park Towers undertook an exercise to reduce energy consumption.
They looked at every source of common property power usage and embarked on a programme of:
- upgrading every downlight in the building (approx 700) to long life energy saving globes, saving $4,500 in the first year
- installing timers on each level to reduce the times the lights were on. Many of them had been on unnecessarily 24 hours a day.
- reducing the number of fluorescent tubes in light fittings in the car park by 50% while still maintaining lighting standards
- examining the efficiency of all pumps, fans and boilers and in a lot of cases installed devices to reduce the speed of the equipment thus reducing consumption
- investigating the length of time fans and motors were running ,and in most cases reduced the time.
- In addition to the savings achieved by replacing the downlights, a reduction of approximately 20% in total consumption resulted.
